Welcome to the 2026 Definitive Revision.

What began in 2007—a project Randall started upon his retirement—has evolved over nearly two decades. Through half a dozen major revisions, he has expanded and refined this document, revisiting both the text and the abundant images.

Reading Without Turning Pages

A hundred years ago, the first television was demonstrated, and motion pictures were transformed by synchronized sound. Today, another technical advance has quietly reshaped the book. Because of its digital format, Angel in Goggles offers possibilities that extend beyond the printed page.

You can:
  • vary the dimensions of the screen to suit your eyesight, your device, or the moment
  • follow links directly to the wider world—briefly stepping online to explore people, places, and ideas that appear in the text: from a grasshopper invasion or Japanese emigration to Argentina; to Miss Faith Desrie, Patek Philippe, Greater Adria, or “The Tube”; as well as terms and references like harpazo, the Waccamaw River, Cucurbita, a barcarole, and alaplaster
  • choose to access a half-dozen custom-filmed videos, via embedded YouTube links, that illustrate the text vividly and entertainingly
  • copy a passage to save, study, or send—and share the reading itself by passing the link to anyone, anywhere
  • this edition is not a substitute for reading; it is an expansion of it
